ION VALASKAKIS APPOINTED AS ACTING EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE JEANNE SAUVÉ FOUNDATION AND THE SAUVÉ SCHOLARS PROGRAM

_

Montreal, June 17, 2010 – The Board of Directors of the Jeanne Sauvé Foundation and the Sauvé Scholars Foundation is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Ion Valaskakis as Acting Executive Director of the Jeanne Sauvé Foundation and the Sauvé Scholars Program.

Mr. Valaskakis will assume the post on June 17, 2010 when Executive Director Désirée McGraw, who is expecting her second child at the end of June, departs on maternity leave. She will return to her position with the Sauvé Foundation and Scholars Program in early 2011.  The Board would like to take this opportunity to gratefully acknowledge Désirée’s dynamic leadership throughout the past two and a half years during which the Program has been enriched and expanded, culminating in this year’s inaugural Jeanne Sauvé Address by Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean. Désirée’s outstanding talents were recognized earlier this year when she was one of five Canadians named by the World Economic Forum as 2010 Young Global Leaders

Ion Valaskakis, a graduate of McGill with a Masters of Arts Degree in Political Science from the University of Western Ontario and an MBA from London Business School, brings to the Foundation superior communications, strategic thinking and leadership abilities, honed over fifteen years of working first in American politics and subsequently in media and telecommunications in Europe, the US and Canada. He has been associated with the Sauvé Scholars Program during the past two years as the principal architect and leader of a number of very important professional development workshops for the Scholars, also providing them one-on-one coaching and strategic career guidance. In addition to the tasks of Executive Director, he will continue to develop and refine this aspect of the Program, as well as the long-term strategic plan for the Foundation.

The Board of Directors invites all Scholars, Alumni, Academic Mentors, partners and friends of the Foundation and Program, to join in expressing very best wishes to Désirée and her family for a happy and healthy leave, and extending a warm welcome to Ion Valaskakis.

“Leaders must dream of changing the world.

They must have an inspired vision of the changes they want to make and be prepared to consecrate all
their energy to that purpose. A capacity to communicate their objectives is indispensable to sustain
the enthusiasm of their collaborators and their perseverance in action.”
— The Right Honourable Jeanne Sauvé, Opening Speech to the National Conference for Young Leaders, June 2-8, 1991
