Xiaoli Pan

Xiaoli is from Shanghai, China and graduated with a BA degree in International Relations from University of Leeds in the UK and a master’s degree in International Studies and Diplomacy from the University of London’s prestigious School of Oriental and African Studies, in the UK. While she was growing up, Xiaoli had the opportunity to experience different social and political environments as she resided in Japan, Australia and the UK. She is fluent in Chinese, English and Japanese.

Prior to becoming a Sauvé Scholar, she had worked for the UN office in Geneva on a research project on North East Asia Security and later on the Conference on Outer Space Security. She eventually returned to China to pursue her aspirations in media and joined the Shanghai Media Group where she was the chief English news anchor and feature interview reporter (news and current affairs) for the Shanghai-based international satellite channel Dragon TV.

One of her referees wrote “even though, she started as a reporter with no journalistic training or experience, she [proved to be] a gifted and hard working journalist, who conducted many exclusive TV interviews with a sharp mind and distinctive perspective, while earning remarkable fame among Shanghai’s 800,000 English-speaking viewers.”

As Sauvé Scholar, Xiaoli explored the subject of art history through anthropological and philosophical angles. Upon her return to China, she started an art magazine in Shanghai -the natural outcome of her research as a Scholar.

Xiaoli is host of current affairs and news programmes at the International Channel Shanghai (ICS). During the second half of 2008 she was extremely busy with special coverages of China's 8.0 scale earthquake, the Beijing Olympics, China's first space walk and the US election, for which she traveled to Washington, D.C., where she met up with fellow Scholar alumni Kirsten Verdel, Jon McIntosh and Guillaume Lavoie.Among important stories of 2010, Xiaoli covers the Shanghai World Expo.

“Leaders must dream of changing the world.

They must have an inspired vision of the changes they want to make and be prepared to consecrate all
their energy to that purpose. A capacity to communicate their objectives is indispensable to sustain
the enthusiasm of their collaborators and their perseverance in action.”
— The Right Honourable Jeanne Sauvé, Opening Speech to the National Conference for Young Leaders, June 2-8, 1991
