Ion served as acting Executive Director of the Jeanne Sauvé Foundation and the Sauvé Scholars Foundation from May 2010 to June 2011, during which time he was responsible for the overall management of the two Foundations as well as the Sauvé Scholars Program for the 2010-11 academic year.
Ion brings to the position a combination of entrepreneurial and executive experience in both the public and private sectors. He has worked as a Press Secretary on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, helped launch and run a ground-breaking international mobile media initiative at a Fortune Global 50 company in London, served as a senior executive in a fast-growing technology start-up in Montreal, and most recently opened his own consulting practice.
He is currently Principal of Portfolio IV, a boutique advisory firm with clients in Canada, the US and Europe. Ion consults, writes and speaks about personal leadership and professional development. Drawing on his own experiences managing people, projects, brands and budgets, as well as leading-edge thinking on peak performance from around the world, Ion has established an innovative professional development philosophy and program called Career NutritionTM that he will bring to the Sauvé Scholars Foundation.
Prior to starting his own practice, Ion was Senior Vice-President of Business Development at the Montreal-based media company Airborne Mobile. In his 4 years there, he served as part of the executive management team, oversaw the sales, legal, business development and brand licensing groups and negotiated mobile content agreements with News Corporation, the National Hockey League, the National Football League and Maxim Magazine, among others.
Ion came to Airborne after spending 4 years in London with Vodafone, the world's largest mobile phone company. There he had global responsibility for all Media and Entertainment content strategy and acquisition, and personally negotiated Vodafone's pioneering international mobile content partnerships with Warner Brothers, Walt Disney, Sony Pictures and their multi-year agreement with the James Bond film franchise.
Before moving to England, Ion lived in Washington, DC and worked for 6 years in politics. He served as the Communications Director to two Congressmen in the United States House of Representatives and then moved to Europe to pursue a business degree. Ion holds an MBA from London Business School, where he was elected president of the student council and played on the 1999 World MBA Rugby Championship-winning team.
He also has a Master's Degree in political science from the University of Western Ontario and a bachelor's degree from McGill University. Ion has spoken on politics, media and professional development in front of audiences in Canada, the US and Europe. He is the Vice-President of the New School of Athens, an emerging geopolitical think tank with offices in Montreal, Paris and Athens that is focused on finding better ways of managing our world.
Ion has also served as an elected member of the Global Board of Directors of the Mobile Entertainment Forum and on the Executive Committee of the London Business School Media Alumni Association. Finally, he is also currently working on a book analyzing the importance of learning from mistakes. Entitled The Magnificent Mistake: How We Can Earn More from Failure than We Learn from Success, the book will be published in 2011.
